A recent study reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing these drugs need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
